You don't need to be a whovian to know what a tally mark is... but it's the lines that are four vertical and then one diagonal. The lines you make when keeping track of something in interval of 5s. Like |||| and then a diagonal line across them all.
I don't think they were asking literally what a tally mark is, they were asking what the significance of it was. (unless I'm wrong and pacer had no idea what tally marks are, then disregard this)
How many times you've seen a monster (called the Silence). You forget you saw the monster as soon as you look away from it, so the characters in the show draw tally marks on their bodies so they know they've seen it before they forgot. :)
I want to do it, but I'm going on a field trip to the zoo so I won't c if anyone else in my school is doin it :( boo. I'll out a few on my hands anyways :)
i don't get why people get freaked out by tally marks

In Doctor Who there is an enemy called the silence. It's a religious order with their main goal, killing the Doctor before he reveals his name. The Silence can be seen by humans, but the moment they look away they completely forget about seeing them. The Doctor and his companions start to put tally marks on their body so they know that they have seen them.
I did this, a long with ten other people in my grade. A teacher asked what it was for and one of us replied with, "We don't remember. Really, we don't know. We've asked each other about it, but we don't remember."
There is this woman who will give you a black spot on you handpalm when you're wounded on sea and she will try to touch you then and sortof make you want to touch her and when you do you get teleported to a space hospital. The womam can only get near if there are reflecting materials near.
