You've reminded me of a riddle: there are three words, each with four letters. One starts with B, one with C and the other with T. The last three letters are the same for all three words, in the same order - but none of the words rhyme. What are they?
It's because English is such a conglomerate of so many prior languages, with their rules and words added in.Welsh, German, Latin, French, Galicia, even some Norwegian. Random rules stayed for something's, while doing away with others that made sense.
