It stands for Graphic Interchange Format, in which case a "hard G" is used in the word graphic. Thus, by standard rules regarding acronyms, it should be pronounced gif, whether the creator says so or not.
RAM - Random Access Memory
However there are plenty of acronyms that do not follow this rule, like SHIELD standing for Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. SHIELD works how it does because it would be stupid NOT to pronounce it that way. I suppose you have a point, and the word a letter stands for should not determine pronunciation in the acronym itself. Look at it as a word instead, like with the SHIELD example. What is GIF spelled like? Gift. Is that word pronounced Jift? Nope, it's got a hard G. How about girl, or gild? Both hard G's. There are exceptions of course, like gist, because this is the English language we're talking about, but for a new term with no linguistic origin, it can be suspected that it follows common rules regarding our phonetic system of writing. I rest my case.
You totally discredit your own language by pronouncing it "jif". You don't pronounce gift like "jift" so why would you pronounce gif like "jif". That doesn't even make sense ... then again English sometimes does not make a lot of sense so ... go ahead, guys!
Y'all are using " hard G " as an argument when the English language is fucked up. GH makes a F sound in Enough. Remember the thing about how Ghoatee is pronounced like fish ?
When paired with certain letters, g can make different sounds. However, GIF most likely uses that hard G due to similar words, like gild or gift, using it. There are exceptions to this rule, like gist, but for a recently coined term like GIF, it is dependent upon the phonetical rules followed for such general words that are not exceptions.
Well, how do you think the language got fucked up? By jerks who don't follow the rules and make up their own pronunciations, that's how. It's a hard G and that's the end of it! Grrrr, I'm so mad!
Well since the guy said it's pronounced with a J sound, you should pronounce it that way. I mean, you correct yourself if you say someone's name wrong. If you pronounce a brand wrong you correct yourself. And the guy who invented the words is telling you you're pronouncing it wrong. Why should that be different ?
He didn't invent the words, he developed the program. He's just using words that already existed and he's not qualified to change the English language.
We use the same "j" sound in vagina plus gif with the "guh" sound just sounds retarded anyway. The argument can go back and forth all day but why don't we just settle it by calling it what it was originally called I mean I don't understand how arguing against that is even logical
This seems appropriate, given the circumstances
When has the sound of the word the letter stands for ever dictated how the acronym is pronounced?
