Yeah I'd say it is originally from doctor who. They have these aliens that when you look at them you can see them but when you look away you forget they were even there and so when they see one they make a tally mark on their arm before they look away. That way they remember they've seen the aliens even though they can't remember what they look like.
I know. I've seen that episode dozens of times. What I'm saying is it's just the tally mark that's similar. When you start to love someone then a tally mark appears. In dr. Who, tey make it when they see the alien. I'm sorry, but the only sililarity I see here is tally marks.
It's not weird wanting to know how people think :) Uhm I wasn't thinking they were the same. I was just trying to clarify that the original idea of tally marks comes from dr who. I think as long as you made it so the people don't make the marks themselves and they just appear it's be really good.

Question tho, what happens when a person thinks they love someone but a tally mark never appears?

Imagine a novel where homosexuality is more common, and then a man and woman fall in love. Hmm.....
What if you got a blue bruise-like tally mark when someone fell in love with you without you realizing it? Imagine casually talking and joking around with your classmate or colleague and then finding a blue tally mark on your wrist when you come home. Imagine realizing they're actually a cool person and sorta falling in love with them too. And the blue mark would turn black.
(Conclusion: tally marks = hella good hookup service.)
This book would be the new TFIOS. You could write it from the perspectives of lots of different people, or you could write it like the Book Thief and have it written from the view of death or life or love or something.
