This is all just baseline.
We have tools and weapons now. We aren't unique for it, but we're the best at it.
We wield devices that can spit fire at or above the speed of sound, and we can harness the power of stars to either power entire civilisations, or to blow them the fuck up!
It's very possible that aliens haven't contacted us, not because we're stupid, but because our world, and lifestyles, and customs are hell to them. We have been hunted since our very start, we evolved into the apex predator, and any intelligent life does not understand how we did it, so they fear us for it.
The only living thing that can reliably and quickly kill a human, is another human.
let's write a book that is told by this guy who is terrified about this creatures that invaded their planet only to find out that the creatures were humans
Oh god. You're absolutely right! Appa was flying on fumes, poor thing, and by the end, aang gave zero fricks. Just goes to show that Azula is terrible.
Story time:
My legs are screaming for me to stop and take a breath, but I can't allow that thing to catch up to me. My throat feels dry and my heart seems like it's going to pound through my chest. I can hear the crunching of the leaves beneath me as I run. Every time I stop, it seems to be closer. Every time I turn around I see it there. In the distance. Just... staring. I don't think I can go any further.
Weakness is taking over at an alarming rate as I, seconds later, slow my pace. My eyes stay wide open in alert.
I've been running for hours now. Did it stopped following me...? I slow my pace more, coming to first a jog, next a quick walk, and finally a slow walk. I spot a creak, and go to it. I slowly drink the water, feeling small drops of it trickle down my chin. I finish, decidin to sit under a small, hollow cave.
Soon I see a few drops fall, and in six minutes, it's pouring. The soothing rain calms me down, until I spot a figure standing there, staring... Oh God...

Too long the moon has hung un-monitored and unsuspected in the sky! It has gained an enormous tactical advantage!
