Well, you could beat him up or do some delayed gratification. Make him slowly go crazy. Leave weird notes in his books and in his locker. Stuff like that.
And that's how it's done
( which honestly I don't recommend because doing shit makes you just as bad as the bullly. They should be punished but not in a way that makes you a villain )
There should be more people like this, people who kick the living shit out of assholes.

I would've drove him to the edge of madness.
Then, I would've destroyed his life.
Then look him in the eye and say "Remember my friend? Y'know that empty feeling you have? That you just can't escape? That's how my friend felt. Leave me alone, or else you will feel this for the rest of your life."
Wow...I completely missed the part about the suicide because I skimmed so fast. If I were you I would have thrown the bully under the bus and held him there.
So you llet this happen to your "best friend" for years, without doing anything slightly more civilised (like informing school, police, the bullys parents, something really), only to go full berzerk on him - like a fucking psychopath bully - after you decide this was enough, and then to YOU "it was worth it"? So when the bully's (or his parents') "best friend" does the same to you, this is going to be "worth it" too? Where you guys from, some albanian mountain village?
It's a hard thing to admit you are being bullied. Makes you seem like a little bitch. Same with saying that someone else is being bullied, especially if it's your friend. Makes them look like they can't take care of themselves. Social stigma against being weak makes it hard, especially if you're a guy.
Waiting for a story from someone else: I had this friend who was off-beat, because what was "joking" and "good natured teasing" to him came off as bullying to others. Sometimes a teacher, parent or principal would set him straight, but he'd meet a new person and thinking he was giving some good-natured ribbing would again come off as bullying. Then, one day this person just beat the cr@p out of him in front of his parents, and set him back years in being able to socialize. So, I burned the bitch's house down. It's fair, right? If much violence is an appropriate response to bullying, then extreme violence is an appropriate response to that.
