My history professor told us a story of when he was studying to be a doctor (which obviously didn't work out, but that's not important) that he used these in his anatomy classes to cut open cadavers. He said that he cut himself so many times on accident because they're so sharp.
If you have a properly shaped obsidian blade, you probably won't even feel the initial cut because it can be made so sharp that it actually separates your cells from each other as opposed to crushing them as it cuts.
