The Memory, Sorrow and Thorn Trilogy. I read those books back to back in 3 or 4 weeks (each book is between 800 to 1400 pages) and by the end I found myself in history class wondering why we had not discussed the seafaring people who established the first colonies ruled by men (these seafarers were a race of people who did something similar to the Valerians in A Song of Ice and Fire). Then it slowly dawned on me...That never actually happened and I did not have extensive knowledge of OUR history, I had extensive knowledge of a FICTIONAL history...
The Insignia Series, not only was it awesome, but when I finished it I had been in the back of the library, with all the dusty nonficiton books, reading back there for probably three hours straight. When I got up and had to go to class I was so disoriented, I couldn't remember what the room number I needed was, and I kept catching myself thinking of technology from the book like it was real and I'd used it my whole life. Loved the series, awesome character development and plot line.
Enders Game stands alone. However the ability of O.S.Card to build on it and take the series into another realm made it worth a read. It loses steam and begins to labor after Xenocide unfortunately. But if you dig piggies, Jane, space travel and philosophy ... read it. Following Ender and how he navigates every situation is half the fun. It is required reading in my AIG class. Perfect for the curious mind.
