The places that the muscle used to be on the bones leaves grooves. They probably look at the shape of the groove, and estimate the amount of muscle. From the mass of the muscle they probably worked out the strength and power behind each whip of its tail. Just my guess, but I hope this clears any doubts
A human can create a miniature sonic boom using a bullwhip - that's what makes the whip's signature snap. The really impressive thing about the diplodocus is the scale thereof.
