It's extremely hard to get on disability, applicants are usually denied at least 3 times before getting approved. In the meantime, they're not able to work, so assistance is greatly needed in those situations.
While this is true, most people keep at it. And while it is true some on welfare cannot work for various reasons, most are completely capable.
I doubt anyone would argue for getting rid of welfare completely, but we definitely need an overhaul. Anyone who claims there is no fraud is either ignorant of the facts or in on the fraud.
I must apologize for my poor communication with you. You see, English is the only language I speak so I seem to be having trouble with the translation.
Sorry, my 9-year-oldish is a bit rusty, but I'd translate that as "You seriously whooped my ass again and instead of just shutting the fuck up I say something about sex with your mum". Duly noted, and thanks a lot, kiddo. But it's nothing really, when it's not a disputant, but just a victim.
Most of the people I know receiving welfare are either: A) parents working a full time job-don't have time to volunteer B) People with disabilities who are unable to work C) People taking care of a sick/disabled family member-who don't have time to volunteer.
Yeah it kinda is. You cannot have full-time income and welfare income without something hinky going on. That's why so many part-timers get upset when they get raises; they don't want to lose their "benefits."
Let me explain how it works for honest people. Several years ago I was working part-time (all I could find), and my wife was unemployed. We went to the welfare department just to see about getting Medicaid so she could see a doctor about a feminine issue. I was working as much as I could but we could barely make ends meet, much less pay doctor bills. After about 5 hours of filling out paperwork and being shuffled from one rude bureaucrat to another we were finally told we could not get medical help unless we took food stamps too. We told them we didn't want it because we preferred to earn what we got out of life, but finally had to apply because she needed to see a doctor.
After jerking us around for 3 freaking months the case worker finally got back with us about our application for assistance.
We were denied Medicaid because I made too much fucking money WORKING PART TIME WITH NO AVAILABLE INSURANCE!
Oh, but she had great news for us: we were approved for the food stamps we didn't want in the first place.
Ten. Fucking. Dollars. A. Month.
And, of course I'd have to work that off.
The number of hours a person works doesn't really matter. It's the gross income weighed against the size of the family. It is totally conceivable that a single parent with four children who works full-time for minimum wage could qualify for assistance.
By the way, excellent job using your one personal anecdotal experience to form your opinion on all others. Totally legit.
Only one of many. One of many.
I used to be a pizza delivery driver and saw many many many welfare families. I was later a driver for Schwann's ice cream and had many welfare families on my routes that bought a hell of a lot more junk from me than I could ever afford. I also was a police officer and dealt with welfare families. My ex wife is a mental health counselor and deals with many welfare families.
So yeah, I don't know shit about it but you do.
So there was still space for some more stories, where your stories all come from, great. You're a bad liar, and really don't know it. That has a certain entertainment value.
I don't really understand your point here. So people on welfare shouldn't be allowed to order pizza or buy junk food? I don't care how much money you have or don't have, it's not up to others to tell you how to spend it.
Welfare needs an entirely new system. One with drug tests, physical tests, and a mental test.
(I know plenty of "disabled" welfare receivers who work under the table regularly. Some people might need the benefits, most just figured out how to scam the system.)
On the drug testing, though, all but one state that has tried it has had a positive test rate (i.e., drugs detected) of less than one percent - meaning the state ends up spending drastically more on the testing than it would just giving them the benefits.
Welfare fraud accounts for about 2% of total claims. The persistent meme of the "welfare queen" is insanely outdated. While fraud does exist, it's not nearly as prevalent as people think.
I don't know about national, but my hometown has more fraud than not. If some small town rednecks can figure it out, I'm sure plenty of other people can too. They just probably aren't stupid enough to brag nor get caught.
And what is the "welfare queen" meme?
If that is the case, your small town full of rednecks is an outlier. In the vast, vast majority of cases, people on state assistance need it and use it for necessary things and are not on drugs (if Florida is to be believed, anyway).
As for the "welfare queen" meme: it's the idea that people use welfare for superfluous things while, in fact, being very rich and scamming the system. Reagan used it a lot, especially during his campaign fo president.
My hometown could be a unique case, but they are the only welfare people I know and thus the only ones I can refer to. I just have a hard time believing they are some of the only ones doing it when they are 5k out of 318 million.
I'm not convinced this number is accurate, but it includes all government assistance programs. I can't speak for others on this thread (and perhaps this is where the differences of opinion are coming from) but I only call actual welfare cash payments "welfare." Food stamps, HEAP, Medicaid, and the like are the programs that most of the elderly and working poor are involved with.
So that stats I found are those the US Census considers welfare. With statistics there is always another way to look at them. However, backing yourself up with information from solid source is always a better than sweeping generalizations. We really have to raise the level of online discourse and get away from the culture of hate. (not that your specific comment was hateful)
It would actually be super helpful if certain people would just stop making "facts" up to back up their claims and generally find any figure that doesn't fit their agenda "unconvincing" or the like. Or use "private" definitions.
Yes there are many government programs that many people list as "welfare." Headstart is "welfare" if you want to go that route.
I and most everyone i know only call actual welfare (cash payments) welfare.
Medicare is not welfare. SNAP is not welfare. HEAP is not welfare.
And I think that's the kind of thinking that leaves people who would otherwise only need welfare temporarily trapped in the "work-fare" cycle that leaves them on welfare until death.
I'm sorry but a lot of people abuse the system too you people think it's all honest people..
People try and fake disability to get free money, there are baby mamas that lie and have their baby daddy's live with them also there are people who are on it but sell drugs on side and use money to party and play bingo and so on... So don't act like it's all bunch of worthy people using the system when it ain't I think welfare should give food stamps or whatever and no cash but that's none of my business
The UN is investigating the UK government, due to alleged deaths resulting from disability cuts in the wake of being assessed as "fit for work".
It doesn't always work.
