Like I said, my southern is a little rusty

Sigh. When the heavily populated north began passing trade laws and the like that were harmful to the southern economy a group of southern states decided that they were not going to sit idly by and be pushed around. They formed their own country. The federal government said "you cannot have your own country, we will shoot you until you come back". The south said "we will shoot you till you let us leave" There were more northerners and more manufacturing capability in the north, so the southerners were shot until they rejoined the union. Many southerners (and many northerners) fly the Virginia battle flag to state that you can only push them so far before they will depart from your company, forcibly if necessary. Abridged version.
