But what if it's a high carbon steel? Would they just...diffuse through it by following the carbon?

The hell you talkin about I took a very low carbon steel and carburized it in fifteen minutes in my backyard firepit.

Same concept except I could do it even faster because with pure iron, carbon would diffuse in much faster.
