Yea I have heard French are very proud of their language and that if you try to speak English to them (as I would cause my French is crap) they may just ignore you or dislike you
Still the same guest here: this is a bit of an exaggeration. Most French people won't dislike you if you speak English to them (except, maybe, the older ones), but their attempt at talking English in return will probably sound pathetic, I mean, for citizens of a a country in which we learn English in school for at least 8 years. And even those who know how to speak English tend to keep a terrible accent.
French here too ! We're not proud of our language, but most of us won't speak good English because :
- we don't really need it (French is spoken in many countries) ;
- we start learning English when we are 11, sometimes later ;
- English shows and series are dubbed in French, so we barely hear English ;
- English pronounciation is almost the opposite of French (French is a flat language, English requires many moves with your tongue and jaw) ;
- we know our English sucks and we are ashamed to speak it.
:)
I've been to France last month and it really sucked. Seriously, I could communicate with ANYONE. The guy at the airport bakery did not understand me when I ordered a baguette with cheese and ham.
I went for a convention, of course I understood the actors, but nothing else of the program. They didn't even bother to translate important info because they 'forgot' there are non-french-speakers
every country has people who don't speak multiple languages and please don't act like your country doesn't have the equivalent of a chav ( ever seen that post about chatas?)

You seriously should not make fun of someone's English when you made multiple mistakes...
Meh. I'm on three, and learning a further too (I'm from Britain)
And it annoys how true this is, that I can't find another Brit who speaks even a second language.
all languages where i am are non-existent, french is mandatory for three years but Spanish can be taken and that is it all. other ones have to be done outside of school in you own time. which is a shame because learning another language would be fun i just cant pay for the outside class time.
@pokethebear No, no threat is happening right now and at this point there is a lot of trust put into the Crown and they wouldn't want to ruin it
@gibhacker I don't think he was talking about that, because the King had to leave Spain during Franco and he came back later
