The modern concept of art-as-examination was very useful for about fifty years, until we learned what it was supposed to teach us. The concepts of artisanship-as-art and art-as-social-function have always been here and do not need replacement, as evidenced by the current trends in design and the popularity of Apple products (whatever ELSE the latter one may say about our social values...)
Your art teacher seems to not understand that the meaning of art lies with the creator. And I'm pretty sure the creator of the top one didn't put quite as much feeling into it as the second one.
I don't think of modern "art" as art so much as a visual representation of abstract thought. Or a scam to sell to rich people who like to flaunt how rich they are to other rich people
Y'all sound like 60 year old geezers 30 years ago. And not only in the comments of this post, in general. A bunch of of old semi-demented pensioners complaining about how shitty these modern times are in general with their toilet bowls as art objects and and singers who can't sing. Fuck that Hippie shit, that aint music, whats wrong with Pat Boone? I'm in my mid 50s and when I read your comments here, I feel like a teenager rebelling against her fucking parents. This is really, really, really sad indeed.
Actually the first image does have meaning and is quite famous, just saying. The 2nd one is pretty and I'm sure the person who made it poured themselves into it, but unless they had a meaning behind it (which they might have idk), it's not really art..
Yeah, fair point, but the first one also has meaning as it was one of the first painting of this art technique (which I actually forgot, but we were learning it the other day) so they're both pretty important

You art teacher is a FUCKING RETARD.
This teacher is just straight up ignorant.
