I am proud of our garbage collectors, they do indeed perform a thankless and dangerous but well needed job, for which I hope they are all duly compensated.
They get paid quite well actually. The average fulltime garbage collector gets paid between $30k-$40k per year. The average soldier gets paid $18k-$25K per year.
$30k to $40k a year for a job that *might* be gross, one thats gotten remarkably easier and safer due to automation and standardization versus a $18k to $25k job where death is unmitigatable hazard and may even be a requirement under some circumstances.
In my country trashmen/garbagemen get paid on average €36K (about $42K/year). which is much much more than many professionals with university diplomas. It's our best kept secret, actually.
A few years ago they voted to strike on account of not getting hazard pay and working long hours. during 3 days, no-one in our nation's capital picked up the trash. The city was fucked.
They got their raises.
You're right. Getting deployed is a very important job that most people wouldn't do. Im probably speaking for most when I say that I'd rather drive a trash truck and get my hands dirty than get shot at ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Both are highly undesirable job that we would all be fucked without so they both deserve gratitude the vets get a lot of benefits at least where i'm from. I know some places have pretty bad veteran's programs though and the trashmen are payed as highly as some white collar jobs
This stat also doesn't take into account the permanent disabilities acquired from a lengthy career. Almost all of my infantry buddies have fucked up spinal disks and chronic back pain from the frequent 10+ miles of road marching even though they were never injured overseas.
this is all probably true but don't forget that they have some of the most effective unions in america and get paid comparably to programers. New York veterans can make six figures.

leave out a 12 pack before Christmas with a card. it is a needed job, that many of us wouldn't want to do.

They deal with YOUR trash and safely dispose of this.
