It's all about Thresholds. A strong threshold surrounds a good home and acts as a magical barrier to ward off supernatural beings. Their house was a mess, and they weren't the happiest lot unless at work. They treated it more like a barracks to eat and sleep in. They hardly lived there, therefore - sucky threshold.
I searched for it a while ago when this had been posted again - couldn't find it. It was such an awesome read.
I think it was called something like "Red as Blood, White as Snow"

"it depends on who is telling the story. Long before Snow White ever saw print, it was a story that was handed down from generation to generation orally. Each story teller gave it her or his own embellishment, and the length of time varied. Sometimes it was as short as a few months, sometimes twenty years or more."

Interesting, the version I was told made it seem like only a day or two
There's a twisted and unsettling retelling of Snow White in the wicked stepmother's p.o.v that's really good. It's called "Snow, Glass, Apples" by Neil Gaiman
