They could not be American, and the history of 9/11 and the events that followed are not covered in nearly as much depth in other countries as I imagine it is in the US. As such, it's purely thanks to my extensive use of the internet that I was aware what the twin beams of light represented. That and having been reminded about it through having recently watched The Walk.
True. I think in Norway it was part of the periculum around his age, but of course it might not be like that everywhere. But in relation to what you said, it is shown/talked about in pop culture quite often
At home sitting on the couch putting my shoes and socks on getting ready for school. They were showing coverage of the tower after the first plane hit when the 2nd plane hit live on tv.

Coming down the stairs to tell my dad I was heading to school. He was standing in the middle of the room staring at the TV as the planes hit.
I had just started a new job to pay for college and was at work, I saw the second impact on a customer's tv. My (not then but now) wife was at school. She tried to call me to see if we had any friends in NYC that day and the cell phone circuits were all busy and she couldn't reach me. That day every plane we could see in the sky in WNY made a turn and headed back to land, a short while later the sky was empty, it was eerie. We went to the Godsmack concert at Darien Lake that Friday and they played a killer cover of Pantera's Walk. For some reason this is the stuff I associate with that day.
I was in school. 5th grade. I knew something was off because the teachers kept leaving their rooms and no one said anything. Eventually they told us there was a plane crash in Manhattan. My friends teacher told her class a lot of people were dead. I live on Long Island and my mom worked there so I freaked out. When I got home she was crying on the couch with my dad and I just cried with them.
Senior year of high school. Math teacher asked if we wanted to talk about math or that. Seemed surreal. I remember feeling sad how closely the cameras followed people as they jumped out of the buildings. It just seemed disrespectful, like they're plummeting to their death and we're just gawking at them.
At school. Someone said something about a plane hitting some towers. Didn't give a fuck. Dad said something about it later in the day, I think. Spent the rest of the day playing Oracle of Seasons or Mario Kart: Super Circuit, probably. I assume shit was cash.
I remember that day very clearly.
The night before it happen I had a dream I was in a field of grass up to my waist it was a clear blue sky but thick black smoke was all around. I kept hearing screaming as I look up I see parts of planes falling from the sky. As if they were blown up in the sky. I woke up tinking how weird of a dream.
At the time I lived with my oldest brother, his gf, their baby, and my brother 2 years younger. I was home watching the baby while my younger brother was at school and my older brother and his gf was at work.
Way earlier than he should be home my older brother comes storming in. He looked worried and scared. He said OMG 2 PLANES HIT THE TWIN TOWERS!
I was like what what are you talking about. He said he was at work (he was a cook) when on the radio they listen to in the kitchen they said a plane hit the tower. Everyone went home the restraunt closed for the day. This was at like 7 am they just opened at 5am.

I felt like he was lying but he looked freaked. At that time alot of people were all over. We didnt have tv at the time because he canceled it. No one watched it. So he called the cable company and asked them to turn it on he payed 250 bucks to have ot back on. The second it was on we saw EVERY SINGLE CHANNEL had something about the crashs. It kept showing the towers ingulfed in flames. You could see people jumping from it because they rather die from a fall tham be burned or crushed. It made you scared for your own safty even though you could be states away. And when we found out the pentgon was hit as well. Than that there was another plane but the people on board stopped it and died. It was scary and heart wrinching. I remember crying and I expected my brother to tell me dont be silly stop crying but he was crying to. He was 27 and crying like a little kid.
He told me later he had a dream the night before of planes falling from the sky just like mine.
I heard about it on the bus ride to school..... then once we got to school no work was done that day, every single class just had the news on and we watched it all day.
I came home from school and it was already on the news i remember watching the second tower coming down and saying "I dont ever want to go on a plane,"
12 years later my first plane ride was to New York and we visited the 9/11 memorial, I felt like crying
Well guess what? The whole world remembers too. Because US killed more people (many times the number of fatalities in 9/11) in retaliation. After having lived in the US and really understanding the way people think about wars and stuff, it's hard not to realize that the US government and also the people think that only an American life is a life, all others don't even matter. 200 people killed in US drone air strikes? "They were ALL terrorists." 1 American killed? Shit hits the fan.
I know that thousands in my country have been killed by Americans 'avenging' for a crime that someone else committed. On one side Taliban bomb us, on the other side it's the impending threat of ISIS coming, and on yet another side, Americans sending drones.
