It was actually so their clothes would not get dirty it had nothing to do with relaxing the cow. Back then clothes were a lot more expensive (relatively) and washing took a very long time as machines were not wide spread or likely even invented yet.
I'm not sure if lower class women did this as well, but one of the reasons it took so long to wash clothes is because they had to unsew the outfit if it was made of more than one fabric since they needed to be washed differently

In all seriousness, are there any studies showing that cows understand the concept of clothing, and therefor are indeed less stressed? Or are modern clamp-hose cages doing perfectly fine to ensure that my cheerio's are ready to go in the morning?
The most likely explanation is that somebody saw this artistic expression of a statue, and then made up a stupid story to go with that and expect people to believe it. Comments so far show that a significant percentage of people will believe anything they read.
