i've never been big on colleges, i always figured the highest education i'll be able to get is from a trade school. I know i wouldn't do well in college.
Hell yeah, learn something that has a use and come out debt free? As well as there being over 30 million trade school jobs available paying at least 50k a year? Not bad.
I'm in my third year of University and this is so true. Some of my friends who attend should not be there. They have no idea what they want to do and are just wasting money. They need to figure out what they want before blowing 5k a year.
Trades aren't for everyone. Just because you can't go to a university didn't mean you should pursue a trade. A trade is something that takes years to master and even then you'll never fully master it. If you aren't determined to learn it and arent 100% interested in the trade then you're wasting your time and money in a similar manner as someone going to uni for no reason.
So some people shouldn't go to university and they also shouldn't learn a trade. But they shouldn't earn a living wage in an unskilled position either. So, those of us who are dumb but want to work should just die then?
A trade is a highly specialised aspect of the workforce. Plumbers, carpenters, welders, electricians, etc. These are work environments and professions the common person cannot do.
I've been welding for over 4 years now. Started when i was 16. I've been 100% comitted to the trade. I passed every written test, visual inspection, and destructive test I've ever taken. I take this shit 100% seriously. At my current work I'm the only orbital welder, hand welder, and one of 3 weld inspectors on second shift. Its taken 4 years to get this far into this trade. If you aren't willing to put that kinda work into it then stay the fuck away from tradework.
While not everyone is built for college, nobody should be left out from the opportunity due to ridiculous tuition. Educating our citizens is one of, if not, the most important thing we can do as a country.
That's why I kind of feel you should have some general college that's public/free. Like obviously not to become a doctor but enough to where you can get general classes EVERYONE has to take or most people have to take, and then you can go to a more specialized college or one where you can take the necessary classes needed? Idk if I'm explaining well.
Like what HS was supposed to be for the gen pop 60 years ago. I agree as well. The fact that something like 70% of americans never take an econ class after econ 101 is pathetic AF.
Just to show how pertinent that is, look at perceptions of the tax overhaul... some people who are not the 1% somehow think supply-side and trickle down economics works and that this tax plan is a good idea. Most corporations have come out and said that they will either invest in automation, stock buybacks, or both. Wall street has come out and said it's going to cause a bubble that could very well ruin our economy for 20 years (it's obvious to see why, the interest on our debt will take over our entire budget). THESE are the people that would make bank off it... and even they are saying it's a stupid fking idea (which means in actuality it's even worse)... yet somehow 30-40% of americans think it's a good idea.
What the fuck? If anything taxes on corporations and the rich need to go up, we are at
4% unemployment; 5% is considered max employment. Corporations are making record profits. By increasing corporate taxes and taxes on the wealthy, we can increase our infrastructure, lower the deficit, and encourage growth and reinvestment since those companies don't want to show quarterly loses. At the same time the standard of living will go up and money can move more freely since the middle and poor classes will have some disposable income.
My brother in law tried for five years to get through college, and he couldn't do it. He was all worried and upset and thought his life was over. One of his friends recommended vocational school. He went to electrician school (whatever it's really called), and now he makes more money than me and owns his own small electrician company.
I get that college is a great thing, and it really can be the difference between having a "job" and a "career", but it's not for everyone. Some people don't need to take four semesters of a foreign language; they need an apprenticeship to a welder.
Yea you shouldnt make fun of trade schools. He will actually leave school knowing something useful, while making as much as a college educated person, without spending the rest of his life paying off mountains of student loan debt.
