Doesn't it actually just put less effort into seeing the details, and just makes an assumption based on what is in your direct view?

The point is, you're brain makes an assumption of what's there when you can't quite see. So don't focus so hard on making the lines appear even. Do the opposite. Focus even less on it. Perhaps idly stare whilst thinking of dinner.
Yeah, no. The lines are actually straight around the center dot. You can check by downloading the picture and opening it with any image-editing software.
