My take on it was that there was a projected field of gravity around the ship that cause the bombs to gain momentum and continue following their path downwards. As for the pilot thing I would assume that was also a type of emitted field.

there's gravity everywhere in space, just because you can't sense falling because there's no air, doesn't mean you're not. objects in orbit are constantly falling to earth, just the rate of fall matches the curvature of the earth.
