Paradox of tolerance

If you don't tolerate my intolerance you're intolerant! Disgusting!

It said tolerance so many times it no longer sounds like a word. It just noise.

tbh i just think we should let people be themselves so long as they're not directly hurting someone else

The movie demolition man is based on this principal but using violence instead of tolerance. If a society lacks a method to deal with those that would cause harm to others, all it takes is a single person being born different to overthrow society. If everyone decides to play a game by the rules, the cheater has an advantage don't they? Once people see the cheater has an advantage others may also begin to cheat. Once everyone is cheating it's no longer the exception but the rule, it's no longer an advantage- it's a disadvantage to not cheat. That doesn't mean we should purposely limit our attempts or that we should avoid a certain level of tolerance as a "danger." It means we must always remember when discussing the philosophical that there is a practical side. If I use philosophy to demonstrate death isn't so bad a thing that doesn't mean it's prudent as a practical matter to kill yourself or others- one must use their intelligence or rely on more intelligent folks.

Tolerance is always necessary to some degree.

That's deep and valid. Got to love philosophy.

So,instead of being intolerant of true intolerance, we're intolerant of,ideas that are different than what we like.
