My parents decided to give me and my siblings warnings. Whatever happened next would be entirely our fault.

Declawing a cat is a cruel cruel thing to do. It's like having someone remove the tips of your fingers to that top knuckle. It causes arthritis and other issues later in life, and actually leads cats to become more aggressive because their first line of defense is gone. So instead they will bite, and bite HARD.
America is one of the few countries where it is still legal. I know it's illegal in Australia, UK and Europe. Such a horrible practice, it's animal abuse in my opinion.
I live in the US, never declawed our cats - its freaking awful to do, but also it keeps them from properly stretching their heart muscles. Just clip them, it's easy. I do it for my parent's cat and my neighbors.
Cat scratches are one of the the types of scratches that carry very harmful bacteria and since in a household of 12, a parent can’t expect to know about every little scratch. And given the overreactive tendencies of our aunts and grandparents (“your pet hurt my child! get rid of it!) if a cat were to spaz on a child, we would have to get rid of the cat.
Declawing was safer for everyone involved
It’s a shitty thing to do. All you need to do is clip their nails.
Edit: why the downvotes? I don't know any other country that does this.
If you want a cat but can't handle it's claws then you can't fucking have a cat.
