Who the heck thought that something being animated automatically makes it child-appropriate?
South Park, the Simpsons, Sausage Party, Watership Down (<- this may just be personal for me, but that movie disturbed the crap out of me as a child) just for a start. And, of course, what must be 50% of the entire anime franchise. None of which is aimed anywhere in the vicinity of young kids.
Animation is just a form of art and expression. Often, it does get aimed at kids, because we can use bright colors, weird distortions, and impossible scenarios to keep their attention, entertain, and relate with them easier in their constant search for stimuli. But assuming something is safe for a kid just because it's in cartoon format is a quick way to move everyone in the house towards those awkward life-lesson conversations you weren't ready to have yet.
