Wikipedia isn't scholarly, and that's not a bad thing. I'm in grad school and I'll often head over to a subjects wiki page if I need a detail that it's buried deep in some book but it's something I don't need to cite. Go to it for ideas, not for citations.

Wikipedia isn't prohibited as a source for papers because of a lack of quality but because it is too easy to (temporarily) alter the content pretty much anonymously. It's a great source for sources though
This. I've used wikipedia as the starting point for papers all the time. I look at the citations at the article, and then find those sources. Same as using a traditional encyclopedia.
