At first I thought, ‘that car looks like the Down’s Syndrome of automobiles’. But then I thought, ‘it looks crazy but I kind of feel like we need to allow auto designers to do funky stuff so we get really neat cars with innovative designs.’ Electric cars were probably some crazy man’s idea that finally got a chance. So I say, keep making cars that make me want to throw up. Eventually, we’ll get one that hovers.
That about sums it up. There are quite a few cool cars, some more obscure than others, that were either concepts or even made it to production. Sedans with front seats that swiveled around so you could face the back seats, wagons with gold up rear seats that fit 7+, and most people know about volkwagons vans and utility trucks of the 60’s-80’s (including the camper van.) They don’t make cars like that for a few reasons, but one you hit on the nose. Many of these novel designs that are just cool or very versatile or efficient just aren’t safe or would be impractical or impossible to make safe. There’s a sort of intersection of sorts where automobiles and technology were wide spread and at an established leg of development, and regulations hadn’t yet caught up. In this period were some down right interesting road vehicles.
