I have no patience for this sort of thing. If there was a child drowning in front of me saving that child isnt an act of kindness it's a responsibility.
When I was 13, my family and I took a vacation to Hawaii. I was lounging on the beach, just enjoying the sun and perfect weather, when out of the blue I heard a blood-curdling scream - ‘Oh, my god! DADDY!’ I looked up to see a man lying face down in the ocean who was being carried out to sea by the tide. I was a year-round swimmer back then so I swam out to the man and dragged him back to shore. I then had to run back to the hotel, call 911, try to explain how they could get access to the beach (which I obviously didn’t know as a tourist), then run back to the beach to meet the paramedics and tell them what happened. I didn’t know CPR back then. I watched him die on the beach right then and there - in front of his wife and children - just as the paramedics arrived. At 13 years old. And it haunts me to this day. So, yes. In my opinion - this man should receive compensation for saving those children’s lives.

If he's asking for compensation from the hotel, I'm fine with that because this sounds like negligence on their part. If he's asking for compensation from the family, which was what I think the post was hinting with, I think that's insane.
I didn’t fact check or see the tiny quote at the bottom and made a gut-response from personal experience, assuming something else must’ve happened for him to ‘deserve’ compensation (I.e., something external put his life at risk, he almost drowned himself, etc.). Having read the article, I think it would’ve been fair for the hotel to, say, comp his stay, which it sounds like he’s asking for.
Definitely the media as opposed to your response. They basically decided to make a villan out of him for what turns out to be a perfectly reasonable request. He was understandably upset by the entire episode, even more so given he has kids the same age and it basically ruined the rest of his vacation. The hotel was responsible but did nothing's other than fire the useless "lifeguard" which was probably more to save themselves a potential lawsuit
I agree. Why did he have to save them? Why wasn't there a lifeguard? If he hadn't saved them what would have happened? Everytime he went to the pool is he thinking of keeping a look out to make sure it doesn't happen or is he going to be able to relax the same.
"How much is your life worth?" Is often what a lifeguard asks you when they save you. You are not required to pay them but I think they should receive compensation and it's the same with this man.
also, he was under no obligation (ok, maybe moral obligation), to save them.
Okay, but if we are going to be mercenary about this, he shouldn't have done it until a price was set. By completing the action without word of compensation until after means they are under no obligation to pay him either
So basically there was a lifeguard doing jack and was going to let the kids drown. He saved them, and because he has kids the same age it affected him afterwards, marring his holiday. He's annoyed he wasn't compensated by the hotel since it was their negligent lifeguard who failed, and was fired. He was apparently intentionally missquoted to sensationalize the headlines.

This is why podcasts like Joe Rogan on the Joe Rogan Experience and long-form interviews like Ben Shapiro on the Ben Shapiro show are gaining such huge popularity. People are tired of overly edited content from the mainstream media that's tailored to garner the biggest emotional response possible for higher ratings. You dont have to be liberal or conservative to see that there's a serious problem with most media outlets these days and how they're reporting.
I completely agree he should have been comped his holiday. If not for his actions that hotel would have been facing WAY more in legal fees because of the incompetence of their employee. It's hard to find a good, unbiased news source.it shouldn't matter what political party you lean towards, the truth should be the primary purpose of news, but its not.
Not everything has to involve money. People would be so much happier if they learned that.
Not to mention that the guy probably made 2 friends for life, and is an honorary God-uncle (or whatever) to two kids now.
Here is a much more rational account of the incident. Remind me to never use either that hotel chains or booking company. They literally said "well it was his choice, he could have not jumped in" because that would have TOTALLY avoided psychological trauma.
