Yeah. I think maybe that’s actually where metric got started. Because I intuitively assume smaller when I hear metric too. It sounds like a kid trying to impress someone older. Like if someone says their car can go 200mph- that’s unlikely... but possible. Then you hear “well my car goes 321kph!” And it’s like.... nah. You’re full of crap. Or When I see something like “380 flopometers for the price of 200!” And then you do the conversion and it like... oh. 4” for the price of 3.975 inches. Yay. Then in many countries things tend to be smaller than in America- so it’s like... I’m just going to assume that 30kg of Cookies is like 5 Oreos, because the smallest package of cookies here is enough to feed a European family of 6 for a week, and the largest package of cookies over there is like what you get as an airline snack on a 30 minute flight here- so... it must be smaller. While this obviously isn’t true- it’s just what the mind jumps to.
I know. I literally said it obviously wasn’t true- just in case anyone missed the humor. As I said in the post, it’s an intuitive reaction, not a logical reaction, and less than a second of thought (for those of us who didn’t grow up with metric but use it for some things), you can do most conversions or relate the size. But it’s almost like being bi lingual in numbers. For instance- I know intuitively socket sizes or very small distances in mm, but larger distances or heights and non precision volumes of fluid I prefer standard. It was tongue in cheek humor and the FEELING I personally get from many metric measurements. Not a precision guide to metric. You may also note that a “flopometer” is not a standard metric measurement either. I’d hoped that might have given it away.
Dude chill, i think everyone understood that you were exaggerating to all heck. Just joking back. It was a stereotypical dazed joke but I do admit it was not delivered very well. Cheers mate.
Was that not “chill”? Should I have worked “mate” or “bruh” into my reply somewhere? I’m quite “chill,” but I appreciate your concern and assure you that were I not chill, it would be readily apparent. My apologies if my communication style somehow offends you. This is how I speak. I wasn’t directing any aggression towards you or your comment, merely clarifying as text is an ambiguous medium. To further clarify- the original comment was not 100% a joke, it merely contained humorous hyperbole. We’re it a joke in its entirety it would be structured differently, and likely much shorter as well crafted humor is like a spaceship- each component serves a purpose to the larger whole, and the goal is the primary concern with tertiary objectives considered as project guidelines allow.
Oh it's Just the uses of entire paragraphs as responses to one sentence jokes that gave me the impression of aggression. We get what you meant about the joke, no need to explain further. I love that you apparently got the impression that I got offended, we just don't really think in the same wavelength do we, huh? Lots of love, bud.
Sadly, the limp geezers in charge of 'Murica don't like the maths so much these days.
Far simpler to just rely on a pill for everything. Remember back when we thought THAT was the future! :D
Lol. I think that is the case. I made a joke above that didn’t seem to play well, but most people who grew up with standard in the last 20 or so years and have done many types of technical work or hobbies ya e some familiarity with metric. It’s intuitive that most any metric measurement converts to a larger standard equivalent, and that metric countries don’t tend to have the portion sizes or many other large sized things that the US does. So I suppose that mentally it makes sense when you consider the smallest whole number measurement in common wide usage in standard is the inch- roughly 2.5cm, and the smallest common map distance in standard is a mile, which is about 1.6 km. So in common use whole numbers the smallest distance referred to by a standard speaker is going to be bigger. Height messes me up because Americans tend to average 4’10” to 6’4” on a wide spectrum average, but 4.10 meters would be a giant and 4.10 feet would be very short.
