one of my highschool teachers was a prof before he worked there and definitely one of the smartest people i've ever met and another had a masters degree and had installed his own solar system for his house.
Teaching highschool students is different than teaching college students.
Highschool kids think they know everything and act like they are better than thier teachers. So the teachers have to set ground rules in order to be able to get control of the class in case it gets way out of hand.
Where a college student knows they don't know everything yet have matured enough to control themselves. So the teachers can be less strict and more on a friend bases.
Now there will always be some who are the opposite in each roll. I met college teachers so strick and tight ass they could pick a penny off of a tile floor with thier ass cheeks alone.
But than I have seen highschool teachers chilled and relaxed. I even had one that had us call her Mama teach. lol
So yeah other than the few exceptions to the rule there is a reason behind each teacher methods.
2 of my current classes are taught by people without a doctorate. In both of last years semesters I had at least 1 class that was taught by non-doctorate people.
Having a PhD is not a prerequisite for teaching at a university. While having at least a Master's degree is preferable all you really need is a B.S. or a B.A. in the field of the class you are teaching. The only real requirement in regards to the level of degree needed is for accreditation. In the US to be regionally accredited (the better one) you must have a PhD on staff in the subject matter for any major your college/university wishes to offer.
It helps (obviously), but no, you don't need one. I had a cop teach me lit comp 2... he was still working on his teaching degree but he had also had a bachelor's in lit from his first college years.
Most schools have pretty strict rules regarding student teacher interaction, including how students can address teachers. It has nothing to do with the teacher's preferences. And on what basis do they get that apparently all High School teacher "barely got through school and managed to get a teaching degree"? Sounds like someone didn't like being told what to do by teachers.

Tbh most of my high school teachers preferred to just be called by their first name
Story time! Back in my high school calling a teacher (aside from 1) was practically illegal to the students. One day I was in biology class giving a presentation, and my teacher said to everyone "treat me like a student. You are the teacher now" and I replied "thank you philip". Everyone gasped and looked to him to see if I'd get in trouble (I didnt)
