The value would be low if we could easily access those diamonds, but we can’t since Jupiter is really fucking far away

Diamonds are common on Earth too. The perceived rarity is contrived. There are warehouses of diamonds around the world that exist only to keep the gems out of circulation. That’s why the resale value of a diamond is so low.

Learnt in a marketing class that diamonds are actually one of the most common precious stones, but the company (don’t know it’s name) that has the monopoly on the diamond market basically only drops a couple of diamonds into the market a year, making them very rare in supply.

DeBeers. It’s not a company, it’s a cartel.

I explained all this to my wife, and then proceeded to buy her the overpriced stone she wanted.

and they don't do "synthetic" diamonds... which is somehow "unpure" or something. If the shit sparkles the same way, or we can reproduce what would be considered a natural flaw, or we can literally make it flawless, then what the actual fuck does it matter?

High grade Synthetic diamonds are superior natural stones in every way. They can be created almost any size of perfect quality. The diamond lobby fought to force lab stones to be micro tagged because one of the only ways to tell a high grade lab stone from natural is when the stone is too perfect- but it’s very easy to create a lab stone that is essentially indistinguishable from real. Diamonds are prized for their optical qualities, but CZ and Moisinite have superior optical quality. Diamonds are said to be very strong but that’s not true. They easily shatter like glass and an impact of even a slight bump can shatter one of it hits the sheer plane. Diamonds are HARD but they are not tough. Diamonds are very common and a combination of marketing and price fixing are where their value comes from. Even the “tradition” of the diamond engagement ring didn’t start until recent history. Debeers is a cartel and their top people can’t even set foot on US soil without risking arrest. F diamonds

That's true. If diamonds are as available as stones on earth, it would be worthless. However, diamonds on earth aren't rare at all, but hard to obtain

Check out the Adam Ruins Everything episode about marriage & diamonds. He breaks down how DeBeers has the monopoly on diamonds. It's VERY interesting
