I’ve had this discussion with people where they think the left lane is some magical place where speeders have extra privledge. If you are in the fast lane and you are going the speed limit then there is no legal way anyone needs to pass you. You can call this person an asshole but that’s becuase you want to speed not because you are entitled to it.
Unless you are passing people in the right hand lane Get the FUCK out of the way. You don't have to speed. You don't even have to drive fast. But unless you are passing someone in the right hand lane, move over. IT'S THE LAW. If I'm breaking the law and getting your panties in a knot then maybe the police will explain that to me. In the mean time Get Out Of The Fucking Way.
it depends on the road. On a two lane road, the left lane is purely for passing. You get your ass back in the right line after you pass whomever you were trying to pass. On a 3+ lane highway the far left lane passing policy holds true UNLESS there is a left exit (these really fuck things up, don't get me started on the 35/635 intersection).. the next lane to the right (usually the middle lane) is the travel lane, although on 6 lane highways it's usually the next right and then the one to the right of that one. Everything else to the right is for exiting purposes.
If you are in a country where the roads are reversed, all this is reversed.
It's really not that complicated and it pisses me off it's only touched on, if even, in drivers ed here.
I recently finished driver's ed and, in Texas at least, the left hand lane is definitely not for speeding at all. You still have to follow the speed limit, it's just for you to pass if someone in the right hand lane is going below the speed limit. And even then not everyone follows the " you go faster the further left you are " thing because I've seen people insanely speeding in all lanes, that doesn't mean the left hand person needs to go faster to not be passed by someone on the right. That's fucking dangerous.
The left lane is strictly for passing, not for cruising. There are I think 13 states that will actually ticket you if you spend too much time either riding the left lane, and/or not having the intention to pass.
So it's great to be back in Texas, where the speed limit on the interstate is 70 miles an hour, unless your in an 18 wheeler then it's 65 miles an hour, unless it's at night then it's 60 miles an hour, unless you're in a big car with a trailer then it's 55 miles an hour.. and they do this because having everybody drive the same speed on the same road, just doesn't make sense..
I'm surprised they make em drive the same direction...
Fun fact: if you are caught cruising in the left lane in Oklahoma they raised the ticket price last year and now its like 500 minimum if the cop is feeling nice.
edit: Realizing that read weird by this I mean if the cop decides to not put in his 2 cents when logging the ticket giving you a worst name because apparently that's something they can do nowadays?
@insomniafantasy yep.... the drivers here in Texas are just nuts.
@this_isntme is 100% right. They DO do this, and for good reason... although I don't agree with the hierarchy of it all, personally (specifically the trailer limit).
Ok, I’m intrigued. Do you have a tow truck or just a personal vehicle of large magnitude? Do you drive around and ask people who have slid off the road if they have to cash to get back on?

@this_isntme The point is that if the person in the left lane is going 60mph when the speed limit is 60mph then they are not in your way.
Actually they are. They are blocking the flow of traffic. If everybody in the right hand lane is going 60 mph, that's where they should be. See all in a little line. GTFO of the left lane. They are in the way of my illegal quest to traverse Coors Beer from Texarkana to Atlanta. Or maybe my quest to win the Cannonball Run. Maybe I just want to get from point A to Point B. They should get out of the way. It's not a right to hold up traffic. As a matter of fact, it's against the law. If you are driving the speed limit then move to the right with all the other folks driving the speed limit. And Get Out of My Way.

It's against the law to hold up traffic. It's more against the law to exceed the speed limit. Newsflash, speed limits are not recommendations, they are the legal maximum speed.
I mean, I've been in the left lane on the highway going about 20 over the speed limit and passing everyone in the right lane and people will still ride my ass and honk thinking they should get to go as fast as they can " cause it's the faaaaast laaaaaane "
Slow the fuck down before you kill someone or some ballsy asshole decides to do a monstrous break check.
If literally everyone is going 80 then I don't think it's safe to go 50. In some situations I personally think it's safer to go with the flow of traffic even if it's over the speed limit. I might be wrong
Less likely to be in an accident? Debatable. More likely to be killed in an accident because you are operating your vehicle above recommended safety tolerance? Extremely probable.
In all seriousness, fuck Little Rock. Stopped there once, just wanted to relax, jerk off and have a few beers before passing out and completing my journey the next day. No beer, jerked off 3x instead.
OH HOLY FUCK. You know that jackin' it in San Diego joke? "Jackin' it in Little Rock" for my above situation.
Also, here 20 over would have you in jail here as well... if they ever chose to enforce it. 25 over is a felony. What's funny is optimal flow of traffic occurs right around 90 mph. They are literally penalizing you for going the optimal speed... but that's because of the low end of human nature. Old ladies cause far more accidents when everyone is going zooooooom. Fuck that, take their licenses away.
No. No. No. No one should break the speed limit. But if you driving the speed limit, Get in the lane nearest the exit. Because I may choose to break the law. Something you wouldn't do. Something I wouldn't encourage you to do. But I might. So stay over there with the sheep. Everything will work out so much better if you just get out of the way.
I don't know where to begin, other than hoping you're trolling. If somebody is driving the speed limit, you shouldn't have to pass them. Speeding is illegal. I don't care how badass you are, the law doesn't bend to your will
Oh. I assure you the law bends to many peoples will. Frequently and often. Not mine necessarily. But it does bend. And speeding is not always illegal. But impeding traffic is. If you impede traffic by being in the wrong lane and it results in a fatality because three miles back the ambulance got caught in traffic you caused because..."Hurr Durr Durr I'm going the speed limit so I'll block traffic." You just became guilty of manslaughter. You might not get charged. But you may have actually killed someone because you are an asshole.
There’s another way to look at that. Traffic is caused in part by people backing up behind a slower moving person. Now if that slower moving person is going the speed limit then the fault lies with those that are exceeding the speed limit and backing themselves up behind the lawfully driving person.
There's also emergency situations, pregnant people... dude just got stabbed... etc... It's more than just politeness in leaving the "fast" lane open....
And @this_isntme is 100% right, there are situations where speeding isn't illegal.
I know some people that think they're playing police by making people go the speed limit in the left lane. I tell them to let the police do their job, not your responsibility if someone is wanting to go over the speed limit in the fast lane
It's your responsibility to be an intelligent driver. I'd get out of the way of a drunk driver. If you wouldn't you should not have keys to a vehicle. Because you are an imbecile. Now. I'm guessing despite your ignorant and stupid statement you would in fact avoid a drunk driver given the opportunity. And I'm going to think that you aren't too stupid to get out of the way of a vehicle traveling faster than you as it approaches from behind. So do that and let everybody else get on with their life.
"she shouldn't have been going to the arcade with her friends, she should have been responsible and not gotten ran over by a drunk driver"
side note: are arcades still a thing?
I remember going into the local grocery store when I was little and playing on the 2 arcade machines they had there. Was a fun but I doubt they still have them
I bet, while plastered, I drive better than 75% of you. Spotting a drunk driver isn't as easy as it sounds.... besides the ones who obviously suck at it.
Well I meant it as a range. Slightly tipsy to “took three tries to find their car in a parking lot of 20” and “called to ask how they got home when they drove” are included in that range.
if someone is plastered they have extremely stacked odds against them making it home driving. An extremely intoxicated individual will most likely crash and likely die as a result.
That hasn’t been my experience. They have a much higher chance than someone who is sober but overall the odds are they will make it where they are going without incident.
Interestingly the odds of the crash being fatal to the driver is low compared to a speeder. Drunks tend to be cautious but incapable. High speeds are what cause fatalities for the driver.
If you are in a country where the roads are reversed, all this is reversed.
