Herpes is spread by sores around the genitals not just the genitals themselves and wearing a condom won't stop the contact between the two individuals crotches most likely resulting in transmission of the STD. As long as material from those sores makes its way to any membrane on the other person they are at a large risk of infection which is only nominally decreased by condom usage.
They give nominal levels of protection. If the person one is fucking has herpes wearing a condom still holds a higher rick of infection than a man without a condom fucking a woman with chlamydia or at least that's the comparison that was given in lecture last semester.
WebMD says condoms reduce the risk by 30%. Makes me wonder why we stigmatize people with herpes as being dirty. If it’s that easy to spread then it should be something we think of as not ideal but normal.
