Once I get paid after this shutdown, I will get fucked with taxes. It's hard to catch up when you've used what you saved to keep paying your bills.
Imagine working your regular 60 hours a week and just watching your bank account slowly drain without anything going in. Not everyone is being paid 50% more than the private sector, some of us are still under 40k.
1) if you file your taxes properly, it will all be correct after your 2019 tax return/bill
2) are you saying that getting taxed at a higher rate because you make more money is unjust?
When you get taxes withheald from a paycheck, the amount withheld is determined by only the gross pay for that check. So yes, if 3 paychecks worth of earnings get paid on one check it could very well bump you up a tax bracket or two. But when you file at the end of the year your taxes owed (i.e. tax brackets) are determined by your annual gross income. So if you overpaid on one abnormally large check, you'll get it back in the form of a refund or a lessening of your taxes due.
.
Basically it will all be correct after you file.
I am so fucking sorry you're experiencing this level of stress because the president is throwing a temper tantrum.... I really hope it works out for you, and all the workers suffering, somehow. You guys don't deserve what you're being put through
At tax time, it might even out. However with as many checks as are going to be paid together, you get hit in a higher tax bracket and actually get less than you are supposed to have taken home after taxes. Already behind and it doesn't make up for not getting paid. I don't make much more than the private sector, but I do have a pension.
Yes, your take-home would be less. But you'll get it all back after you file. You wont be shorted any money. You'll just have to wait to get it.
.
If it bothers you that much you can adjust your withholdings on your w4 so less is taken out. On the one big check as well as making it up on the forthcoming smaller checks.
I know how taxes work, I'm not dense. However, not getting paid for almost a month now, and getting nailed on the next check, whenever it comes, is a problem when you have to now wait until NEXT YEAR to get that back.
And I've already been through a shut down, it doesn't completely even out. And we can't make any adjustments to our withholdings as there is NO ONE CURRENTLY WORKING TO PROCESS IT.
It's not that it "bothers me" it infuriates me, as it's distressing my life. My livelihood shouldn't depend on the whim of a man-child throwing a tantrum.
It sounds like having government job really sucks. You should probably either get a job in the private sector or do something in the self employed world.
You make 50% more then your private sector counterparts, will actually get paid at some point unlike private sector layoffs, and your retirement package will allow you to retire decades earlier then those in the private sector. Sorry not sorry.
It's hard to vote sources when you can't include links but check the CBO's office. And yes retiring at 55 with 80% benefits is still decades ahead of those in the private sector.
At the end of the day it doesn't matter how much money a person makes, they can still be treated unfairly, esp in large groups, and that shouldn't happen.
On average, public workers with the same experience and qualifications as their private sector counter parts make 32% less, but they also usually have more and better benefits and a pension.
Regardless of D vs R:
.
Any job has risk of layoff. Government work shouldn't be exempt from that risk. If the shutdown layoff bugs you that much, go take the position that offers you a better deal.
.
At the end of the day, i'll bet most of you recognize deep down that you have a gravy job and there's almost none of you who will jump ship because of an inconvenience like this.
.
Be grateful for the soft job you have and enough with the woe-is-me.
With most government positions you need your bosses approval to get a second or part-time job. It's kind of hard to ask when your boss also isn't working. For some positions, like anyone in the coast guard, they'll throw you in jail if you don't show up without a valid excuse... like actually being sick, at which point you're going to need a doctor's note.
Close matthew. But actually princess would rather not give up her power. She'd rather take control of her life rather than allow her prosperity to be determined by anyone else (least of all the federal government). Princess believes that in order for the world to get better, individuals need to take care of themselves first. Once they are on solid ground they are able (and obligated) to be helpful to others.
.
Whining about a layoff isnt an option in my world.
If you have nothing but self-righteousness and scathing opinions to offer, and view the suffering of people in these situations as so far beneath you, one can't help but wonder whatever possessed you to comment at all, why you're STILL commenting-- or how in the world you reached the keyboard from all the way up on that high horse you rode in on.
'
It's also good that whining about layoffs is beneath you... it's not like that's exactly what every comment you've made has been doing so far. The only difference is: you're whining about how whiny everyone else is.
'
BTW - non-existent empathy aside, you do realize that if everyone who is being affected by the shutdown quits their jobs, the country will literally not be able to function? Or is this also a reality you've chosen not to acknowledge?
When you work in federal law Enforcement or federal corrections, YOU CAN'T TAKE ANY TIME OFF OR NOT GO TO WORK, BUT YOU DONT GET PAID.
It's not a layoff, I'm still working.
