Because they are trained to assist you should you encounter a bad memory or realisation; they guide you towards self-realisation bit by bit, and try to understand the underlying problems behind the reason on why you feel this emotion and what causes you to need to rant about it.
Then, via subtle suggestions based on that analysis, they can help you realise that: say the reason behind you getting so angry at this specific thing - is due to other small things which you have unresolved issues about, and if you can address those, you can work on the root of the problem and not just the symptoms.
This would be like paying a doctor to see why your feet and back are sore all the time - you can easily resolve the pain itself by popping painkillers (vs in this example for psychology, ranting), - but the doctor will be able to tell you what is wrong and possibly teach you what treatment will stop it (inflammation from infection, wrong posture - antibiotics, stretching).
Mine is 20/hr. I love seeing her and even though I’ve dealt with some awful abuse and assaults in my life, I feel comfortable talking to her about them for the most part. A good therapist is able to help you get your head feeling better.
@catfluff Just so you know there might be free/low-cost counseling offered through community programs in your area. Or if you reach out to a therapist they may be able to work out a lower price/payment plan with you. Most people just want to help as many people as they can!
Thanks @unicycle. I know my varsity offers 10 free sessions when you are a student, and I used those, and then I still had to see someone - he sucked and I wasn't really doing it because I wanted to, but rather because other people wanted me to, so it didn't help and I decided to leave it until I wanted to go. You cannot help someone who doesn't want to be helped.
@catfluff That's totally fine. I'm glad you're taking it seriously and that you want to take care of yourself. Nobody goes into therapy perfect, and you wouldn't be wasting anyone's time even if you weren't trying 100%. It's a process and a professional can help you to help yourself. Best of luck and I'm rooting for you!

but seriously they are expensive as heck :(

You rather open it and break some dishes. Atleast you will be able to use some remaining plates and have a functioning closet.
