Wouldn't it be easier to just use the oven portion instead of the stove top? One it would be warmer and two you're less like to catch something on fire.
The option of buying shit because of someone else's decision doesn't seem to fit with OP's views on the matter (and I'm with him on that one, no matter how petty it is). But the oven is a good solution.
Ovens are surprisingly good at heat conservation, but poor at actually producing heat. That's why it can take up to 15min to preheat a oven versus a couple on the rangetop and a couple minutes to burn food in a saucepan vs. 10s of min for the oven (you're also not supposed to open the door while baking, too much heat escapes causing temp fluctuations until it builds up again, but periodically lifting the pot off a pan is mostly encouraged). Plus you usually have four burners vs. one oven, so that's like 8x the heat output.
Pretty sure it was done because the states gas mains and electrical grid were getting overloaded and everybody was being asked to turn the heat down before the utilities straight up failed. Dick move right, wear some winter gear in the house or everything gets shut off and you die.
