So I'm going to throw shade at both sides of this argument.
1st most people who post shit about the greatest generation are generally not apart of the greatest generation, it's baby boomers and gen xers. The people of the greatest generation are some of the most humble humans I have ever met and they don't need a entire generation to be their hype man.
2nd baby boomers praise the greatest generation because when the time came to be great and do great things that generation kinda went ahead and did just that. The baby boomers aren't comparing themselves to millinials in the Normandy meme, they are comparing who the admire to the people who will inherit the Earth and judging them (us) to be better than who came before. Baby boomers doubt we can.measure up.
As I once said, "I must study Politicks and War that my sons may have liberty to study Painting and Poetry". We should always wish our decedents easier lives than we lived ourselves.
I know you think you're being compassionate, but that "troubled veteran" stereotype is both vastly overstated, and very damaging to military personal active and retired.
That view of us is what makes it hard for many of us to find work, what makes many civilians uncomfortable and sometimes outright afraid of us.
We aren't going to gun down our own household and neighborhood because someone lit off a bottle rocket.
And then it makes the very few of us who do have problems, not want to ask for help.
Of course they don't want others to experienced what they had to. What we are saying is that not all of them are impacted by war in the way you think they are
