If I were a private practice vet, I'd install a GD hotline directly to the Animal Abuse department of the Humane Society. This is fucking unacceptable and the dog is going to die a horrible death.
Indeed. Sadly by the time the animal's health declines noticably it will likely already be too late. vegan diets for animals should be banned, the people who feed them to their animals should not be allowed to own animals. If you didn't want to own a goddamn predator, don't buy one. Get yourself a sheep - you'll fit right in with them.
So Mrs Bojangles is a vet and has talked to me about this. I don't remember the details, but she said something along the lines of once your dog develops this diet related heart problem, there is no treatment, and they'll eventually (on an order of weeks) die from it.
We're cat people ourselves, but if anyone is concerned about their pupper/doggo, please talk to your vet (and listen to their advice).
It's not even vegan diets. A lot of food that is marketed as "grain free" has problems.
It's even some stuff that doesn't look like hippy new-age garbage either. So check the reports, and if you're at all concerned/confused, give your vet a call.
Apparently there have been a small handful of cases reported in cats as well, although cat food is very different....
