Breeds!! Awesome.
Look, Google the company logo then find it on the front/back getting in/out of the car. There aren’t that many car companies. You’ll get to recognize the main handful of brands within a few weeks or months. Don’t do anything else.
Your brain will eventually notice *this* Honda/Toyota/Ford doesn’t look like the last one and discover why and start to build a file. Ah, Civics are smaller than Accords. Scions are boxy, different boxy than Prius or CRVs, though.
Just don’t force it or feel bad. It’s not an area of interest for you. Lots of people feel like that.
Shame or obligation can’t make your brain care about stuff. But it will pick up more if you put a request and small effort in, then leave it be. If you want to learn, you can. If you don’t, then don’t bother! It’s nbd either way.
If it’s a car you like, you might even eventually become able to tell years based on changes in shape and accessories; if you just keep a mild interest up over a long, long time.
And that’s IF you have almost no interest. You might learn the most common 10 to 40 cars within only a few years if you put occasional random short spurts of focus onto it.
(I haven’t, because I don’t have the interest. But I still kinda-sorta know a little bit anyway, because I drive a lot and am old. You probably subconsciously know more than you think.)
If only there was a device with which you could access to the entire knowledge of humanity. And if it could provide you with pictures of said car in any desirable colour within seconds...
I seem to have a knack for remembering strings of otherwise random letters and numbers, would be far more useful if they could tell me the reg number of a car than the make and model
They do. Uber very much tells you the license plate of your ride. At least in Europe, but I don't see why they wouldn't in the USA. It's the only 100% sure way you have to know that guy IS your ride, and you're stepping into a stranger's car. Be safe, check plates.

"Uh...o...kay?"
"It's a big white truck."
"OH"
