The fact that there's stigma associated with going through tough financial times is exactly the issue. If someone thinks less of you because of it then they need to rethink their priorities in life.

I remember my mom and I we're stuck in the town next to our home town with little less than a gallon tank which doesn't go far in a 6 cylinder van. I run into the gas station with .86 cents as it's all we could muster up in hopes of it returning home. I shamefully walk up to the counter and the cashier gives me this kind of "really?" Look. I say "it's all we got", when out of the blue, a local walks up and hands her $15 and tells us that "that should cover it" I was awe struck, nobodies ever paid for my gas before. I couldn't do anything but thank him over and over and tell him how grateful I was. Since that moment, I'm always nice to locals.
I had this situation in a bakery, two kids were trying to buy bread and a croissant. Everyone was pissed, they were flushed. Mind you, they were 5-6, why would you get angry at little kids for not having a lot of money?? I was just after them in the line, so I slipped 2€ in one of the kid's hand so no one would know, winked at him to ensure him it wasn't a mistake and then bought 4 pastries just so the asshole behind me who was making loud rude comments about "today's youth" and came here to buy one wouldn't have any.
I understand it wasn't a vital occasion, but damn I absolutely hate rude and intolerant people.
