I’ve been getting ready by replaying all the previous ones. What a trip down memory lane. Just finished all the DOOM 3 expansions. On to 2016... I’m excited for eternal.
Yeah. It’s a departure from the series norm in a lot of ways- but not as much as people like to make out of you play it like classic doom- and it is just fun in how it plays on horror/suspense/ambiance. I never played all the expansions back in the day and have found them to be a fun diversion too with some interesting quirks.
*side note- I started at the BEGINNING and didn’t want to skip- and Doom for SNES did not age well for me. Lol. On PC original doom was obviously dated but still fun. The console port however... it was a chore for me to play through.
Great thing about playing Doom 3 like an action game instead of a horror game is that it fits 2016's tone.
Demons show up to wreck shit, are intimidating as fuck, butchering marines and scientists alike, only for the motherfucking Doom Slayer to round the corner with a chainsaw in one hand, a shotgun in the other, and probably heavy metal playing in his head.
Ril and tear, until it is done.
Lol. Heck yeah. If you put it on a wimpy difficulty like easy- you’re basically invincible and can pretty much fight every non boss with a chainsaw. But even on veteran you can play like doom 2016 and it works really well.
I have very fond memories of 4yo me playing Tomb Raider, then 8yo tying my nephew to his cupboard to play GTA on his playstation, and I absolutely hate violence irl. The news were more shocking to me as a child since it was real shit that happened.
My dad made me watch Alien and Aliens when I was like 7... then made me watch The Exorcist and the original The Omen when I was like 12-13 or something. My mom made me watch the TV version of IT when I was 12. IT fucked me up the most lol.
GTA 3 came out when I was 12... and yeah, of course I was playing that back then.
Oh God, my Dad took my older brother with him to see Alien not thinking it could be that scary, and he had him on his lap and at one point he jumped so hard that he threw my brother into the seats in front of them. Years later, I got Alien and Aliens for Christmas when I was still really little just fuckin' because, I guess, and he tried to watch it with me and he had to stop. Meanwhile I just watched them over and over
Aliens was actually intended to be a huge statement on the Vietnam war, especially the concept of standard military tactics going up against Guerilla warfare.
Yes. And with Vietnam- corporate involvement and giving soldiers high tech but not battle tested gear etc. as well as using our own soldiers as pharmaceutical test subjects were huge issues. Even the way the marines armor was decorated was meant to be a nod to the stylistic elements of the war. We see other subtle and unsubtle nods such as the attitudes of the marines towards the locals, statements about the morale effects marine presence is intended to convey, etc. even the weapons used were futuristic analogs to those associated with Vietnam.
