They likely always wanted them eventually- or started wanting them after they were done raising kids but missed aspects of it. Their objection to sex was largely that A kid can happen and that will seriously raise difficulties in life and possibly close doors for you. So at that point:

1. They look at where you are in life, the potential for growth you’ve shown and the bright future you are headed for and say: “you’re ready. You’re sh$t is together and you are mature enough.”
2. They look at what an absolute mess you’ve made of life and give up caring about your future and what you might do. They figure the best you could hope for is to bring them joy through grandkids they can have hope in, and maybe raise a generation that will do better next time.
