Only if you're so bad at it, that their poor English is still better.

actually, they are rude if you don't try, they appreciate the effort and will appear more friendly

The French were very friendly to me in Paris when I asked them in French if they spoke English, they almost always said yes and were happy to help

yeah, if you make a try, they will talk in english rather than see you struggle, but if you don't try, they'll be rude. My boss and his wife, along with some friends went to France, staying in a US$10,000 a week villa, paid for, when they asked someone directions, in english, the response, "Get a map!", lol

One time I went to Toulouse and tried to order a baguette with cheese and ham. The guy there did not know what I wanted until I pointed it out.
