Several days ago I watched shape of water and honestly, it was a good film.
I thought there would be a while smutty scene with foreplay and everything but it was just affectionate.
All people ever talk about is "she fucked a fish" really show that it doesn't matter what the film is about, if there is a sex scene, that's what it gonna be and that's it.
That's weird, oddly I finally watched it last week too. Felt a lot like "Splash," but with more fish scales, cat murders, and racism.
.
But yeah, I thought the movie was well written, and the characters felt real enough. The fish-sex thing kind of threw me off a bit, but interspecies humanoid relationships are hardly new. They make constant appearances in so many popular games and films. The only reason I can think people are upset this time is because of HOW fishy the guy was
Wether one thinks the film deserves an award or not, was “good” or not- all irrelevant. Simply speaking- withholding a reward in the arts for “controversial content” is... asides baffling and a bit self defeating... kinda scary? Now- don’t get started with the “what if someone made a pro Nazi movie and...” no. Stop. There is a HUGE gap between “controversial” and “hate piece.” On the left sadly people often distill anything controversial that isn’t to taste to hate piece, and on the right folks tend to elevate blatant hate pieces to the status of art. Just because one doesn’t “get” a film or doesn’t like themes or subjects in it isn’t an excuse to try to side line it. Good art makes us think, makes us feel. So “Joker” or whatever title asides- if it’s controversial but we aren’t supporting hate and bigotry- then art is art and worthy of praise.
