Who’s paying $300 a month to watch cable unless you’re buying like- major pay per views monthly? That being said- do you have any concept how much a ticket to Super Bowl 54 is? $900-5k on average. A Local Kansas fan would have to pay about $300 one way for a plane ticket. Want to watch the big fight in Vegas but live in Puerto Rico or Alaska? That’s several thousand dollars in air travel alone. And unless you plan to walk, not eat anything, and go home the same day after the event... you’ll need to spend more for food, transpiration and lodging.

What’s that? You have responsibilities, maybe an on call job or a shift the same day that you can squeeze in watching your favorite event? Surely that means that you can spare 20 or whatever hours to fly there and see it right? You’ve got enough PTO that you could travel somewhere new at least once a week every week in the year right?

Oh? What about your 5 close friends or 20 friends or whatever that come over and watch with you so you can all enjoy it and discuss and hang out? I’m sure you can book a trip for 5-20 people to some far flung travel spot for $300 a month.

Now- IF you spent $300 a month on cable.. and IF you saved EVERY month for a year- at the end of a year you’d have enough money to take one pretty decent middle class vacation for like 1-2 people somewhere kinda “out of the norm” for you without having to penny pinch. But- round numbers a week vacation a year is 200 hours. If you watch more than 200 hours total for your household a year than the $/hour return is still worse.

@halfdeadhammerhead- I actually have the opposite problem. I enjoy small groups of certain people circumstantially- with an emphasis on a healthy dose of alone time. However I am frequently invited to various parties or affairs and such, and am generally expected to entertain people through fun facts, jokes, witticisms or buffoonery. I am in real life prone to occasional tirade- but through emphasis, impression, and much more colorful phrasing and language than I would generally use in such a public medium- they are USUALLY at least entertaining to an audience. That said- I am prone to getting caught up in certain technical conversations that amongst my technical friends make for fun conversation- but my less technical friends generally find boring so usually change the subject.

I am actually quite frequently highly inappropriate and lewd- age having mellowed tempered me- but in my youth being quite literally a full fledged scum bag who would stand on par with the most offensive and divisive of comedians in content (quality I do not claim to be on par- but many enjoy my humor.) That said- as a public space and one which I know for a fact holds many sorts of folks- some of whom have made the things that bother them known- I at least try (and sometimes fail) to be respectful of that. There are jokes and such that I feel comfortable telling a room of people I know or can at least “read” and who know me to some degree and can contextualize the joke which I wouldn’t generally tell here for those reasons.

Pewdie pie comes to mind as an example from more current popular culture. Is he racist? Anti Semitic and such? Those who know him best may or may not say he is- but are in a position to understand his jokes and character. Those removed from him see only the face he puts to the world and must judge his character and intent on that. Regardless of intent- people have a hard enough time telling a story from a source like the onion from fact, and humor is being widely used as a tool of subversion and propaganda. Some will “get” the satire or irony etc- but many will not. So one cannot count on a wink and a nod to denote subtlety and as such I choose to avoid the issue by and large.

In itself it is a form of high concept humor. This very post being an example. Humor is like a drug and when you are at a point that you can enjoy the best comedy without laughing because you are already at the punchline by the set up but appreciate the technical skill you’ve generally passed fart jokes and things can start to get weird.

Memes are the perfect example. Those memes where they compare a “2010 meme” or whatever to a “whatever current year or future year” meme and show some odd image with nonsense words illustrate the point well. Cats and cheeseburgers were novel and funny for a time as were so many other meme formats- but the novelty wears off and with it much of the humor. So things can get rather abstract or surrealist in the quest for a humor fix when the “good ol” stuff starts to not hit as hard.

Andy Kaufman was a very good example- his elaborate alter egos and eccentricities- those acts and behaviors that left people to wonder how much of that was stunt and how much was the man? There are jokes to make others laugh, jokes to make ourselves laugh, and sometimes jokes that do both. In the end though- we are all responsible for our own entertainment and only get one life as far as anyone can prove- so enjoy yourself.

The difference is Andy Kaufman was a comic genius. I struggle to get past your second post of blah blah blah without falling asleep.

As I said- I’m not comparing myself to any comic genius- I’m merely illustrating something about the concept of comedy. No one says I was here to entertain YOU, but you’ve made a fine contribution to entertaining me my little plaything. Thank you.
