It's the same word in French and I used to pronounce it yasht up until I was 9 when my sister told me that "yôt" and "yacht" were just the oral and written version of the same word. So it didn't feel out of place, just of bit of a trap.
I lived in a non-English speaking country and at the end of 3 years I could count to 10, ask "How much is that" but not necessarily understand the answer, and say "Excuse me". I have nothing but total admiration for anyone who come from another language and can hold a conversation in English, even if it's a bit rough.
