give extremely hot omni-edged blades to the a gritty space story and it's bound to become brutal. just imagine near instant combustion if not handled with the proper armor. incinerates the organic matter it comes in contact with. imagine the power consumption on this thing too. you'd probably need some big bulky suits to even carry the energy for portability.
a lightsaber chainsaw would be less effective than just a lightsaber with a blade of the same length. the advantage a lighsaber has is that the entirety of the "business end" of the weapon is able to be used, literally 100% of the blade. If you made a lightsaber chainsaw it would work better than a normal chainsaw yes but it would be riddled with weak points for breaking and only have a mono-directional cutting edge instead of 360 effectiveness at the entire full length.
Why has no one ever tried light knuckles? Less chance you'll accidentally cut yourself or someone you don't mean to, easier to wield, and watching someone do kung fu that literally burns their opponents hands off would be fucking badass
@nicengelman you might be onto something. light katars?
i feel like we could make incredibly sharp blades, but there's no point to making it that sharp when the blade cant hold an edge that well
in melee combat, the person with the largest "effective combat area" on their weapon wins, light knuckles would be awful because you would get cut down by someone with an actual lightsaber before you can even get close.
not only would you be basically unable to block, your blocking area aviable is the length of your knuckles so you have to be precisely accurate to block with them, even if you block a hit the person with a lightsaber has leverage from the basic mechanics of wielding a weapon allowing them to gain more force in the attack than someone without that leverage effectely letting them batter you every time you block a hit which you arent even likely going to be able to do.
a person very skilled with unarmed martial arts is still fairly likely to die to a single person with a knife who even vaguely knows how to use it.
I'm going to say that with light knuckles, you could easily parry a light saber, and then close the distance quickly when your opponent starts their swing again
"you could easily" literally fucking how
ok i want you go to out and have someone swing a 2 inch thick 3 foot long cylindrical pole at you, you have to block it with only the front end of your knuckles and nothing else, if it touches literally anything else you lose your hand and or whatever else it touches.
this person should be standing at a distance so the pole when let to sit extended past you only go past you by a couple inches at most but still be past you.
this will be the position from which someone with "light knuckles" will have to block the vast majority of their attacks.
youll also notice from just how physics work that the end of the blade you will be trying to block will be moving extremely fast and WILL bludgeon your arm even if you block it perfectly simply from the sheer force of the blade coming down on the perfect point of your hand to send a shockwave all the way down your arm.

now even if you somehow sucessfully block the first hit, run it again and (cont.)
and this time have the person immediately pivot from being blocked into another strike from the opposite side, which should take less than a second to do, it will require no movement anywhere from the person with the stick than moving their wrists and just a tiny bit in the shoulders,
you have to remember the extreme advantage range gives you in melee. because of how far the end of the blade is from the pivot point (the wrist) any minor change in the pivot point allows for an extreme change in the blade.
go watch some videos of trained people dueling with swords or hell even with mock lightsabers, see how fast they can pivot out of being blocked by even another blade.
If I have light knuckles you can bet your ass I'm going to be trained enough to parry a light saber or light club or light yo yo or whatever you throw at me. And I'm going to look damn good while I do it
look above where i say "a trained unamed martial artist will still very likely die even if attacked with knife by someone who kinda halfway knows what they are doing."
it doesnt matter how much you are trained, if you are going up against someone who is also trained (they will be if they have a fucking lightsaber) literally every single mechanic of melee combat is a disadvantage for you, there is basically no advantage to having a shorter weapon in melee combat where the person you are fighting is using a sword, this is made even worse by the fact the lightsaber is a sword with infinite cutting edges going full 360 around the blade and basically no weight meaning they can swing it jtust as fast as you can move your "light knuckles" as the light knuckles would weight identically and be shorter, meaning you would be swinging at the same speed at your wrists, and they would be swinging at a function getting faster the longer the blade is.
you have to remember that the very basic lightsaber form that every single jedi or sith is taught as their basic form that they have to know to learn any other form is designed to kill people who dont have lightsabers, its designed to kill people who dont have the range advantage a lighsaber does and destroy the weapon of their opponent.
