Both are valid points. British food is... passable at best. It gets the job done, and that's about it. American food has the opposite problem: it's packed with flavor but not very nutritious. That's probably why Americans feel the need to eat so much of it, and why they think it's better than it actually is.

Well, I think it's because both sides are too proud. And because fish and chips burgers aren't too popular.
