I’m not saying anything on your opinion- it’s yours and it’s valid. But as someone who likes fondant (but does somewhat “dock” points for its use in applications where it is used as a “shortcut” or substitute for skill...) I hear a lot of people say they don’t like fondant and I don’t get it. The texture to me is something I particularly like. Form but soft, gooey... I dunnoh. I guess I can’t really ask “why” someone doesn’t like something- it’s so subjective and all- but I wish I could understand beyond just knowing- people sometimes don’t like stuff.
If everyone liked the same things life would be boring. Personally the only type of sweet covering for cake I like is a whipped topping. And your definitely right about it's overuse to substitute for skill. The problem I've found, besides the taste, is that it's use tends to lead to a dramatic reduction of quality and taste of the cake portion of the cake. If a cake doesn't taste good without a topping it shouldn't be served. No amount of decoration is going to make up for the lack of taste. I am definitely someone who falls into the if it looks ugly but tastes good I'm going to eat it category.
An enlightened outlook on cakes- too often the presentation or the tipping “is” the cake- and the cake is just there for show. I agree the world is better with many preferences. Like I said- not calling out anyone’s opinions. I just wish I could understand first hand why so many people dislike fondants flavor (without that understanding ruining my own enjoyment of it of course.)
