Anti Depressants take a while to fully take effect, and they often restore your sense of volition before they start to help your mood stabilize, which can increase suicidal ideation. Of course there's like a billion other factors to consider, so let's actually have some damn sense instead of everyone thinking they're going to take fluoxetine one time and suddenly have their entire outlook on life change

When taking any pill but most importantly anti depressants it’s a key part of the recovery to have open communication with your doctor. There’s a reason why there’s several versions of the “same” drug. There’s numerous factors in depression. So the doctor picks a pill that seems to best fit your listed symptoms, and if you notice harsh side effects with little to no gains the doctor should change your medication. You should be an active patient even if it’s hard to be, because no one will fight for your best interest unless you do.

Nicengelman and jokur_and_batmon covered this well. I’d also add that the human mind is a very complex thing and the human mind and body can be very individual things. Wether it is an antidepressant or birth control or any number of medical treatments- even the way people react to recreational drugs and alcohol is often unpredictable. when you mess with a complex system- you don’t really know everything that will happen.

You have to work with your doctor, try different medications- and it takes time. Time for each new med to have an effect, and time to “ween” off safely from a med that doesn’t work and try again with another. Some people find a treatment that is near “perfect” for them- and others just have to try for the medicine that does the most good and least harm- or find another path of treatment that suits them. There are no “magic pills” we know of. With antidepressants the balance is just making sure side effects or not- that long term the treatment is still better than no treatment at helping a person.

lol. Thank you. Edited. For posterity- The original comment had “good” and “harm” reversed. I kept the rest of the sentence the same even though it would read better flipped- to make it easier to see what it originally said.
