Pit maneuver. Vehicle contact patch- the amount of each tire that actually touches the ground- averages about the size of an average adult male hand. A relatively gentle push lined up to about the vertical of the rear Shock/strut takes away much of the suspensions ability to absorb the force and puts it to the tire, which breaks the contact patch. The slip angle, a combination of the directions each tire is oriented to and the geometry of the wheel distance, changes and inertia coupled with reduced friction at the rear causes the rear to start to overtake the front while the vehicle is induced to “turn” to one side. Polar inertia steps in and brings the vehicle around like a pendulum.

It’s important to try and get the hit on the center line or else the suspension and other members might take up the force and transfer it to the body- this can disturb vehicle handling but it less likely to cause a predictable loss of control. By “wedging” the car with a vehicle in front, you can effectively prevent even a highly skilled driver from recovering as they no longer have the space needed to offset the momentum on the vehicle and have to “ride it out.”

The bump from behind moments before not only upsets the vehicle and likely the driver, putting dynamic handling and response balance, but the sudden surge reduces available lateral grip, making it much easier to induce a loss of control.

This is a very well executed and well coordinated example. There were still several opportunities and possibilities for the suspect to defend against this, and MAYBE recovery would have been possible with proper and timely action- but where this really shines is the coordination and precision of execution. They moved fast enough and all did what they needed to do swiftly- that’s usually one of the best tools. If you act so that they don’t have the time to react or to understand what is happening until it is too late.

You sure this is cops? I mean... not one blue light anywhere, all aggressors driving black trucks, clearly in the desert... this may just be someone late to "raid area 51".

You know I didn't even notice that. It's not to say they can't be cops or feds or something, but there isn't any actual indication besides the PIT maneuver that these guys are law enforcement

Arizona Department of Public Safety. State troopers with combined missions encompassing the responsibilities of several state agencies that were all gathered into one organization with different departments including highway patrol duties.

Arizona takes the philosophy that officers are better used to get criminals off the streets than deter crime by presence. So DPS likes unmarked cars because people are more likely to drive recklessly if they don’t see a black and white. Then instead of a criminal who was well behaved being watched, they have a criminal who does something they can potentially take them off he street for. There are pros and cons to the logic, however one feels- the department likes its unmarked cars.

The lights I’m not sure of. I have heard Arizona has some odd regulations and can be quite strict on them- or at least quite literal on them. I know they have certain rules for marked and unmarked cars, when and who and for what calls you can and can’t do certain things and wether your lights being on prevents or allows it and so forth. I also know they voted down a bill to make not stopping for unmarked, lights or no lights, not a felony- since anyone can pretend to be an unmarked officer and making it mandatory to pull over for any unmarked car is dangerous- but proving someone KNEW a car was an unmarked police car is basically impossible. So maybe they didn’t need the lights? Looks like the road is closed- so they probably didn’t have to worry about other cars- and given their plan, being more visible probably wasn’t conducive?

Speculations on my part there. I do not know if these particular vehicles are in the actual motor pool for the department. They have some unmarked SUV’s and some muscle cars. I don’t know if late model trucks. If anyone finds out more I’d like to know definitively. If I find out more I’ll post it.
